CLP Regulations.
CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) is the EU’s way of implementing GHS. The regulation includes the classification principles and labelling rules agreed at UN level (GHS). It introduces new classification criteria, pictograms and hazard and precautionary statements. The main objective of the GHS/CLP is that the same hazards will be identified and labelled in the same way all around the world.

The regulation on classification and labelling came into force on the 20th of January 2009. CLP aligns existing EU legislation to the United Nations Globally Harmonised System (GHS).
GHS is a United Nations system to identify hazardous chemicals and to inform users about these hazards through standard symbols and phrases on the packaging labels and through the safety data sheets (SDS).

CLP will replace the current system contained in the Dangerous Substance Directive (67/548/ECC) and the Dangerous Preparations Directive (1999/45/EC) and it complements the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).
It is hoped that CLP will facilitate international trade in chemicals and to protect workers, consumers and the environment.
